Freedom Quilts is an organization based out of Perham, Minnesota. Its purpose is to help recovering law offenders pay off fines, in order to start a normal, productive life. Founder, Patti Refsland, recognized a need in clients at the Rewind Treatment Center. Clients at the center have chosen to stop abusing drugs and alcohol, and to receive counseling for their addictions. Ultimately, these men want to start over. This becomes difficult when a large sum of money is keeping them tied to the county jail, or a job--when they are in their early stages of counseling, treatment and recovery. A recent client only needed $60, or else a warrant would be put out for his arrest. Just coming from detox at the county jail, he had no money to pay the fine. He was stressed and wanted to return to his job. Freedom Quilts kept him safe and on the path to recovery by paying his fine!
